Evidence-based Development

Developers of complex systems are required by law, by standards and by customers to provide evidence that their products are fit-for-purpose. Even before a product is built, systems engineers are required to supply, for example, design justifications, safety cases and compliance statements for review and sign-off as part of the development process. While the system is being built and tested, further evidence of the verification process has to be gathered and presented. And while in operation, evidence for the correct functioning of the system may be required.

This one day course is a practitioner's guide to Evidence-based Development, an approach to the development of complex or high integrity systems which ensures that this body of evidence builds steadily and systematically from the beginning of the life cycle, such that at any time a body of well structured and appropriate evidence is readily available.

Course content

A major challenge in the development of complex and high integrity systems is validating their correctness and hence, if necessary, achieving certification in accordance with relevant industry standards. Evidence-based Development (EbD®) is an approach to systems and software development which ensures that confidence in the eventual validation and certification of the system builds steadily from the beginning of the life cycle, such that when certification is sought a body of well structured and appropriate evidence is easily available. The systematic adoption of EbD can significantly reduce the life-cycle costs of high integrity products and systems by reducing the costs and improving the integrity of the validation and certification processes.

This course introduces the key concepts behind EbD and examines the simple yet elegant information model which underpins the methodology. The application of EbD is illustrated by working through examples of the flexible and generic EbD processes. Finally, the practical issues of implementing EbD are addressed, including tool support.

The emphasis throughout is on clear, practical guidance which course members will find of immediate value in their work. The course tutor will illustrate some of the principles behind EbD with practical examples, with the intention of stimulating a debate during which course members will have the opportunity to discuss issues and problems they face in their daily work in a non-threatening and supportive atmosphere. Course members are encouraged to bring along appropriate material which will help to illustrate the subject areas that interest them.
